We Can Do Better

**I apologize for the bias-ness of this post: I am a dog-lover but I know this type of bullshit happens to all types of pets across the board. I just can't keep quiet about it anymore!**  Bias-ness?!  I just made that shit up.

A man sees his neighbor drag his dog outside with a plastic bag over its head.  The neighbor asks the man what he's doing and the man says, "The damn dog is no good, needs to be put down".  The neighbor offers to take the dog off his hands in an attempt to save the dog's live but the man refuses to hand over the dog.  He proceeds to take a hammer and begins bashing the dog from head to toe.  The neighbor calls 911 and police respond within seconds; the officers order the man to stop beating the dog.  He drops the dog to the ground.  Sensing that its saviors have arrived, the dog attempts to drag itself to its feet and run to the officers but it's too late.  Skull fragments and brain matter are spattered across the sidewalk.  The dog's crime? It pooped on the floor in the house.

A stay at home mom of two disabled kids patrols Tram Road in Bay County, Florida and rescues animals that are abandoned there by their selfish owners.  The road is desolate, deserted and surrounded by woods; the perfect place for undeserving pet owners to ditch their pets when they are no longer convenient for them.  She rescues the animals that she can and leaves food for the hundreds that outsmart her.  Recently a mamma and her litter of brand new pups were deserted on Tram Road.  All of the pups were saved, except for this poor soul.  RIP, little one:

As of July 11th, mamma still hasn't been found.

Randy Grim, just a regular guy who owned his own dog grooming business, has been rescuing stray and abused animals from the streets of St Louis, Missouri for decades.  Randy closed his grooming business and City of St Louis handed over the stray animal problem to Randy and with a small army, they have rescued thousands of animals from the streets.  Randy names every single animal he rescues and posts them to Facebook.  Every single day.  He works 7 days a week and rarely takes a vacation.  Although most of Randy's rescues end up in happy homes, there are a some unfortunate endings.  Brownie was found tethered by an extremely short and heavy chain with severe burns all over his head and body.  Randy's group, Stray Rescue, moved as fast as they could to save his life but sadly, he didn't make it.  RIP, Brownie...I'm sorry we as humans failed you.

A woman out walking in Minnesota observes a group of kids tormenting and kicking around a pitbull puppy in a park.  A rescue group saved the pup but his injuries were serious.  The merciless bullies were never found nor held accountable for their evil actions.  Fortunately Franco was able to overcome his injuries and is living the rest of his life with a wonderful family who will make sure he is loved every single day for the rest of his life.  Franco is one of the lucky ones.

Animals don't ask for much.  All they need is food, clean water, shelter, and love.  And if a person isn't ready to provide those things then they need to wait until they are ready to take on the responsibility of another living being.  You wouldn't abandon your kid if it was too much of a hassle for you, would you?  The same goes for your pets; if you don't have time for them, you don't need to have one.

When Randy found Grace abandoned on the street, she looked like this:

Two months later, with the proper treatment and care, here is Grace:

Don't buy your pets from pet stores, who buy from puppy/cat mills; there are millions of animals in shelters that just want to go to their forever-home and go to sleep each night knowing they won't have to worry about where their next meal is coming from the next day.

We as humans need to do better by these precious souls that were put on this Earth to be our companions.  For all the unconditional love and companionship they give us, the least we can do is give them a comfortable life while they are here.  And when they aren't so lucky and they take their last breath on this Earth while suffering and alone, all I can hope is that the light will guide them home.

P.S. This man is saving kangaroos during a flood!  Talk about awesome!
